"No other acoustic instrument can match the piano's expressive range, and no electric instrument can match its mystery." ~ Kenneth Miller
Truly, the piano is one of the greatest life-enhancing inventions. It can provide the owner a lifetime of enjoyment for the individual, family and friends.
The beautiful sound of the piano is created by the synergy of its materials: wood, metal, buckskin and wool. Over time, the piano, like any investment ,needs periodic maintenance to preserve its beauty and usefulness. An untuned piano or unresponsive key touch can discourage even the beginner pianist and is no pleasure for its audience.
Three areas of piano maintenance can be outlined by the 3 ‘T’s’:
Tuning:
Most piano manufacturers suggest that the piano be tuned at least twice a year. String tension within a piano can be from 20 tons to 30 tons. Changes in humidity cause the soundboard in a piano to swell or shrink, thus having further impact on the strings.
Tone:
Change in piano tone is usually caused by change in the surface of the hammers. The felt covering them hardens over time and requires adjustment to maintain a quality tone. This adjustment is called “voicing.”
Touch:
Sometimes people say a piano has a “light touch” or a “heavy touch”. These can be due to multiple factors such as the action of the piano going out of adjustment, or humidity, which increases internal friction in the action to make it more unresponsive.
Maintenance of these three areas by a Registered Piano Technician (see PTG.org) will ensure your piano will give you many years of enjoyment.
